From Suffering to Service

In 2001, Guido first learned about Joni and Friends after he heard Joni’s radio program. “I remember hearing the peace in Joni’s voice and wanted that peace so badly myself. ‘How could Joni have so much joy when she deals with quadriplegia and chronic pain daily?’ I thought,” Guido shared. Shortly after, Guido would come to know his own tragedy when he had a motorcycle accident and became a paraplegic. Then one day, he saw a Wheels for the World trailer filled with donated wheelchairs and remembered the ministry work of Joni and Friends. Guido saw the perfect opportunity to serve as he continued to heal. He signed up as a Chair Corps volunteer and started collecting wheelchairs in his neighborhood.

After reading in our Newsletters about the transformed lives of children and adults with disabilities, Guido was compelled to sign up for a Wheels for the World trip! “It was then that I began to see more of the complete picture for my life, and how my motorcycle accident and all the pain and suffering led me to service,” he told us. His first trip was to Ghana in 2012, and the call on his life to continue serving became stronger.

Since then, Guido’s not planning on slowing down anytime soon and continues to bear much fruit for the kingdom. Since his first Wheels trip, he’s been to Ghana twice, Haiti, Brazil, and Romania. Also, an unexpected blessing happened while he was serving in Haiti, Guido met his future wife, Jenna. They stayed in touch after the trip, and got married last year! “I saw her heart for people affected by disabilities. She has a beautiful heart and loves the Lord,” he said.

Do you have a desire to go serve? Guido would tell you, “Go! Your life will be transformed. God can use anybody. If He can use me, and I’m in a wheelchair, then He can use you too! It doesn’t matter what skills you have or don’t have, the only requirement is that you love people.”
