Adriana with her husband and sonAdriana is a vocational intern with Joni and Friends. Born in Costa Rica, she and her husband serve as missionaries to Bosnia. This is their story:

“Looking back 10 years, or even a year ago, I would have never imagined finding myself in the U.S. as a Cause 4 Life intern with Joni and Friends. I always thought that my life was right on track, exactly what God wanted for me; living in other countries and sharing the love of Christ with those who don’t know Him. And all of that was fine… But it wasn’t until I experienced the worst loss of my life that I realized God wanted more from me and my family.

Dani and Sofi are the two precious children that the Lord gave my husband and me; both with a disability but each with a beautiful story. Sofi left us to be with the Lord last year, April 18, 2013. I thought I couldn’t go on without her, and it has been, without a doubt, the most painful separation that my family and I have ever experienced. However, in the midst of our suffering God filled us with love, peace, strength, grace, and mercy once again. Sofi left us with precious memories; through her God showed us how to be more loving to people with disabilities.

In our weakness and pain, God made his presence greater in our lives. And as time went on, we started asking God how we could serve in this area. We didn’t know where to start. When we spoke to our leadership they pointed us to the University, implying that we should consider training in a disability related field. But we didn’t feel like that was what God intended for us. We trusted that at God’s appointed time, He would guide us and open the right doors.

A few months ago, my husband and I stumbled on the Beyond Suffering curriculum and I signed up for the online course. I learned so much, but most importantly, God was healing me through that course. Today, here I am at the International Disability Center, serving as a Cause 4 Life intern. By the mercy of God, I’m learning more about what He has in store for our family and our ministry. Being here is part of His provision. Only He knows what plans He has for us, plans that from the middle of our pain will give us the capacity to serve and love others with the love that only comes from Him. We continue to learn how to better love and empathize with those that suffer. We cry with those that cry and laugh with those that laugh. Only in His love and in His Word do we find our way.

It fills me with joy that one day we will join in that grand banquet with our Lord and Savior. We will sit with the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind in their glorified bodies. There will be people from all nations, tongues and tribes, and we will be reunited with our lovely Sofi. Why am I here? It’s part of God’s provision and grace. He directed us to Joni and Friends; guiding us and giving us more tools for the ministry from which we are called to serve, for the honor and glory of His Name.”
